From Home to Classroom
All students in grades 1 through 6 will be expected to complete language arts and math lessons at home. The Good and the Beautiful curriculum is an open-and-go book that allows for a seamless transition between home and classroom. It is suggested that a student completes at least four lessons a week from both language arts and math to finish in a standard school year. Subjects not studied at the HLC are the responsibility of the families to complete.
Middle School Curriculum (Grades 7–8)
The Hybrid Learning Center (HLC) middle school program serves students in seventh and eighth grades. Core subject areas are taught on a two-year rotation to ensure that students receive exposure to each content area regardless of their year of entry into the program.
Subject Areas
Writing (Two-Year Rotation): Students begin a structured writing program upon entry into the middle school program. New writing concepts are introduced in class, with assignments completed primarily at home. Writing instruction emphasizes organization, clarity, and effective communication. At times, students may be asked to share or present their written work in class.
Literature: Shakespeare and Novel Studies: Students engage in guided literature study that includes a Shakespeare play, with attention to literary elements, language, and historical context. During the spring semester, students participate in a novel study using a book club–style format that encourages discussion, analysis, and thoughtful engagement with the text.
Social Studies / History (Two-Year Rotation): Social studies instruction includes the study of geography, civics, and cultural understanding, while history focuses on the exploration of civilizations from ancient through modern times. Instruction emphasizes connections between historical events, ideas, and their relevance to the present.
Science (Two-Year Rotation): Science instruction includes hands-on, inquiry-based unit studies in areas such as astronomy, weather, geology, and minerals. Students apply scientific concepts through projects and activities designed to promote curiosity and understanding. All middle school students participate in a science fair during the spring semester.
Elective Studies: Elective offerings vary by semester and may include, but are not limited to: art appreciation, hymn study, STEM activities, civics, community service, and music appreciation.
High School Curriculum (Grade 9)
The HLC high school program begins in ninth grade and is designed to support families as students transition into high school level coursework. Instruction aligns with Kentucky academic expectations for high school students and emphasizes foundational skills necessary for long-term college and career readiness.
In addition to academic coursework, the HLC provides guidance and support related to test preparation (ACT/SAT), dual credit opportunities, transcript development, scholarship awareness, and college and career planning. While instruction and academic support are provided through the HLC, parents retain responsibility for awarding grades and high school credits on their student’s transcript.
Subject Areas
Writing and Literature Foundations: Ninth grade English instruction focuses on developing foundational skills in academic writing, reading comprehension, and literary analysis. Students engage with a range of texts and writing tasks designed to strengthen organization, clarity, and critical thinking. Instruction supports students’ at-home language arts coursework without replacing parent-selected curriculum.
World History: World History explores major civilizations, historical movements, and global developments from ancient through modern times. Instruction emphasizes historical thinking, geography, and cultural understanding.
Biology (with Lab): Biology introduces students to foundational concepts in the life sciences through a combination of direct instruction, hands-on labs, and scientific inquiry. Emphasis is placed on observation, experimentation, data analysis, and scientific reasoning. This course includes a lab component appropriate for high school level science credit.
Elective: Bible I (Apologetics): Bible I focuses on foundational Christian beliefs and the study of apologetics. Students examine biblical truth, worldview, and faith-based responses to cultural and philosophical questions. Instruction encourages thoughtful discussion and personal reflection.
