Middle School (7th & 8th)
Our middle school program fosters an environment of real-life applicable learning. Students are given materials and projects that challenge their critical thinking skills and encourage reasoning and debate to solve problems.
Subject Areas
Applied Language Arts: students learn language skills like reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a practical way, and actively use these skills to analyze information, express their ideas, and solve real-world problems across different genres of text, often incorporating critical thinking and research elements to enhance their understanding and communication abilities; essentially, going beyond grammar drills to apply language skills in meaningful contexts. Our applied language arts aims to equip students with practical skills to effectively communicate, analyze information, and engage with the world around them through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This curriculum is not intended to replace an at-home language arts curriculum. Students should continue their language arts curriculum of choice at home on the days they are not attending HLC.
Applied Math: the application of math concepts to solve real-world problems. Applied math connects mathematical theory to practical uses in fields like engineering, healthcare, and physics. All math curriculum completed within the program will be provided by HLC. This curriculum is not intended to replace an at-home math curriculum. Students should continue their math curriculum of choice at home on the days they are not attending HLC.
